What is a nutritionist-dietitian and what is his or her role?

A nutritionist-dietitian is a university-trained professional whose practice is regulated by a professional order. The role of this health professional is to help you develop healthy habits based on your specific health goals.

How do you become a dietitian-nutritionist in Quebec? How long is the training program? Education

To practice as a dietitian-nutritionist, you must have a Bachelor’s degree in nutrition. In Quebec, three universities offer this degree: Université Laval, Université de Montréal and McGill University.

One must also be a member of the Ordre des diététistes-nutritionnistes du Québec (ODNQ) to obtain the title of dietitian and nutritionist.

What is the difference between a nutritionist and a dietitian?

Nutritionist and dietitian refer to the same professional activity and are protected titles. In order to use these titles and the initials Dt. p. or P.Dt., you must be a member of the Ordre des Diététistes Nutritionnistes du Québec.

Each province in Canada decides whether or not both titles are reserved. The title of dietitian is strictly regulated, while the title of nutritionist is only reserved in certain provinces.

Why should you see a dietitian-nutritionist?

Whether you are trying to lose weight, treat the symptoms of a disease, improve your athletic performance or simply adopt a balanced diet, the mission of a dietitian-nutritionist is to help you achieve your goals with advice.

Nutrition is the science of food or the study of the relationship between food and the body, but it is also about the nutritional needs that differ from one person to another.

The science of nutrition is about health, and the goal of a nutrition follow-up is to improve the health of individuals through the adoption of healthy lifestyle habits.

Who is the nutrition follow-up for? How can a nutritionist help you?

Would a nutrition follow-up be beneficial for you? Here are some key signs that you may recognize:

  • Your weight is not in a healthy range;
  • You have digestive problems or discomfort;
  • You have a chronic disease that could be improved by your diet like diabetes, cholesterol, hypertension, gout, etc.;
  • You think you have a food allergy or intolerance;
  • You are on a restrictive diet and you are not eating enough;
  • You want to feel healthier and learn about nutrition.

Before investing in a “miracle cure” that promises to make you lose 10 kg in one week, please consider consulting a dietitian nutritionist. He or she will give you unbiased, personalized advice to ensure lasting success.

Whether it’s through education, concrete tips and tools or close follow-up, your dietitian-nutritionist will guide you towards achieving optimal results.

A closer look at sports nutrition in Quebec

Practicing a sport on a regular basis requires a healthy, balanced diet, sometimes adapted to a specific sport, and that’s where sports nutrition comes in.

If you want to reach a specific goal, whether it is for endurance sports such as running, or field hockey, figure skating or basketball, a nutritional follow-up may be relevant.

Depending on the nutritional needs of each sport, your dietitian-nutritionist can help you change your eating habits, optimize your macronutrient intake and your sports nutrition or even create hydration and electrolyte plans adapted to your needs.

You will be able to establish your goals during the first meeting with your dietitian-nutritionist.

A closer look at eating disorders

TeamNutrition also treats eating disorders.

If you suffer from anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa or binge eating, your nutritionist’s goal is to help you get out of the vicious circle of food restriction, to improve your relationship with food and to find pleasure in eating.

Some signs that you may be suffering from an eating disorder include an obsession with weight, excessive food restriction or guilt about eating certain foods.

If you recognize yourself in some of these signs, don’t be afraid to talk to your doctor. He or she can then refer you to a dietitian-nutritionist to get the help you need.

What does the first consultation with TeamNutrition look like?

From the first meeting, you will benefit from :

  • A 60-minute meeting with a dietitian-nutritionist registered with the Ordre des diététistes-nutritionnistes du Québec (ODNQ);
  • A nutritional assessment and review of your eating habits;
  • A list of recommendations based on your tastes, your lifestyle and your health or performance objectives;
  • A special access to technological tools such as a smart food journal and the KoalaPro health and wellness portal;
  • An insurance receipt for reimbursement or tax deduction purposes.

Following this first meeting, your dietitian-nutritionist will set up a nutritional treatment plan adapted to your needs.

Please share all relevant information with your dietitian-nutritionist to optimize your chances of success.
